Slow Food Fignic with Willabrand

This really is a touch of Tuscany in our own backyard. The Glen Ewin Estate at Houghton dates back to the 1840s. For more than a century, this property was famous for its fruit and jam production. Today, the historic homestead and rolling fields are home to the Wauchope Family, with son Willa the driving force behind local success story of Willabrand Figs.

We were  lucky enough to have  an informative talk on the history and products at Willabrand by patriarch Bill Wauchope. Bill and Wendy Wauchope were perfect hosts as we sampled wines from the region and shared our personal stories of figs.

Afterwards, we celebrated the way Willabrand has preserved the best of this season with beautiful fig products and a decadent shared lunch, whilst enjoying the stunning views of the surrounding hills. Personal favourites were the fig cordial and glacé figs.

The fig season finished early this year, but it did not stop passionate lovers of fresh figs from foraging through the terraced orchard for perfect fruit, and their delight at harvesting the last of the season.

A fabulous event which we hope to repeat earlier next year so we can pick our own figs while they are at their best.
All this and more and only 30 minutes from the Adelaide city centre.
