We were delighted to run a community workshop 'Creating a Kitchen Garden' at the City of Tea Tree Gully this week. The workshop was an extension of their popular Seed Library program.

Slow Food South Australia committee member Rosa Matto taught participants how to design their kitchen garden, create healthy soil with the aid of composting, how to propagate herbs, and to plant what you like to eat in the right quantities. Rosa explained the many benefits of growing your own food and how the Slow Food movement promotes food sovereignty.

Rosa also shared tips on making waste-not food items and cleaning products, using ingredients which are often discarded, such as citrus peels.🥬🥕🌱🍋🍅

We had a great turnout at our recent Slow Food South Australia AGM with our committee excited to launch a project we’ve been working on called the ‘Snail of Approval’.

The Snail of Approval is an international recognition program which inspires producers, growers, chefs, food artisans and restaurant/cafe owners to use and promote the Slow Food principles of Good, Clean and Fair food from our regions by demonstrating connection and awareness of Slow Food values through their contribution to the plate, planet, people and culture.

Congratulations to our first Snail of Approval recipients.

At our recent AGM for Slow Food South Australia it was thought-provoking and inspiring to hear guest speaker Andy Wood from OzHarvestSA speak about the important work of this leading food rescue organisation.

Our 2024 AGM saw us thank and farewell Gina Dal Santo, a valued member of our committee for over three years, as we also welcomed a new committee member Nick Tadija.

Although Gina, founding cheesemaker and lecturer at The Artisan Cheese Making Academy TAFE SA will no longer be part of our committee, we’re delighted she will still assist as a volunteer. Our new committee member Nick is passionate about furthering Slow Food initiatives and awareness in South Australia. Nick also works at TafeSA as a part-time cookery lecturer, and is executive chef at Down The Rabbit Hole Wines.

Earlier this year we welcomed Simon Millcock from Mintaro in the Clare Valley to our committee. Simon has a strong family history and connections in regional SA and is dedicated to highlighting Slow Food South Australia in these areas. 🐌

🌟 Delicious aromas at the Barossa Farmers Marke 🌟 Delicious aromas at the Barossa Farmers Market 🌟 Chef Emily Thomas, one of the chefs from Otherness Wines in Angaston, wowed us with her Pan-fried Chicken Hearts with Buttered Beetroot and Celeriac at the Slow Food SA demo. All ingredients were locally sourced from the market 🍗 Emily shared tips on preparing and cooking @abelswayfarm chicken hearts, transforming them into an easy to make at home, restaurant-quality dish. A meal encapsulating the #slowfood ethos, eating organ meats like chicken hearts promotes sustainability and fights food waste, while providing a nutritious and affordable protein option. Paired with local, seasonal produce from @produce4chefs the result was a delicious and eye-opening meal.
